ALL THE TIME!

By Sr. Joy A. De Vera, RA

“Would you like to hear the story of the gingerbread boy?

It’s the story of a cookie that looks like just a boy…

He’s made of ginger, sugar, and spice…”

I was fascinated whenever I would hear Sr. Lala sing this story. The child in me is being awakened whenever I will hear her stories. What makes it creative is the rhyme that she puts in every story. She had a lot of stored action songs for kids, too.

Sr. Carmela, we fondly call her Sr. Lala, is a 92-year-old nun. She has lived her religious life for more than 60 years. She usually forgets my name, but she never forgets my “purple vocation story.” She would narrate it as if it just happened yesterday. “You only dared to enter in a Congregation with a purple habit right? You never knew that there was and God showed you a bus-load of sisters in the stopover where you are taking your breakfast and all of us were wearing purple. See, how God runs after you!” I would just nod filled with joy as she narrates it to me.

Recently, I had the chance to be reunited with her. So, I made “kulit” with her if she can tell me more stories aside from the classic gingerbread boy.

She said, “What story do you want to hear?”

So, I answered immediately, “Anything… maybe God-stories…”

Then, she immediately started…

“Once upon a time…”

Then she suddenly stopped and said,

“Wait!”

I asked her,

“Why?”

Then she said,

“If it’s God stories, it is not just ‘Once upon a time…’,

because when we talk about God’s stories, it’s ALL THE TIME!

God’s stories are every time!

God always makes time to meet us!

But the problem is we don’t pay attention!

What a pity!”

I marveled at her words.

In the Parable of the Talents, the Master said to the servants who doubled his talent:

‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’

Matthew 25:23 NRSV

Storytelling is a gift. You can use it in extending God’s kingdom. God can purify our human tendencies to gossip, to retaliate in anger, to be opinionated in ungodly ways, or spread fake news if we become fully present in the simple ordinary events in our life where God is ever-present. Nothing is impossible if we anchor our life in meditating the Scripture. Jesus is the Word incarnate. Allow Him to be alive in you. Start proclaiming His truth.

What are the ordinary, simple God-stories that you have? The precious stories that God entrusted you to proclaim and share? Are you attentive to His-stories in your life history?

These might be the seemingly ordinary encounter that you had that make you smile and make your heart leap for joy. God usually uses those seemingly ordinary events in our lives to speak with us.

And if you have that treasured encounter, may you have the courage to share and proclaim. Do not be afraid!

There is nothing too little in a love story that is too great! Proclaim and Share!

In this manner, God can make more beautiful, wonderful, inspiring stories in your life today and forever!

Be excited about your journey with Jesus!

Lord Jesus, make my heart unstoppable to share You and proclaim You so that my JOY will always be complete!
